With our background in fashion and styling, it’s not surprising that all roads lead to eclecticism on this blog, and this week will be no different! After a recent trip to Spain, we were completely inspired by the Art Nouveau architecture and design present in the gorgeous city of Barcelona.

A quick history lesson on the Art Nouveau movement: Taking place from 1890 through 1910, this new style was a direct response to the rigid, disciplined décor of the 19th century. The idea was to design something completely new and modern to re-connect us with nature by using flowers, plants, and most significantly—organic, curved lines.

Art Nouveau was a lifestyle movement that encompassed everything from decorative arts, architecture, and even jewelry. The most noteworthy examples are in Barcelona dating back to 1888 at the Universal Exposition. Most of us are familiar with Antoni Gaudi and his fantastic examples of the Art Nouveau style. Since it was such an elaborate and powerful look, it had a short-lived run that was ultimately replaced by clean, useful, and minimalist modernism.

Below are some examples of how what’s Nouveau is new again, along with some inspiring original Art Nouveau design!
