VT HOME: Spotlight on Interior Design Resources – Rick Owens

“When we first started the furniture, my statement of intent was ‘a fur on a rock, next to a fire in a cave.'”

With a solid foundation in the fashion industry and after having written our first book with personal style types as the basis, it should come as no surprise that we are always intrigued by fashion designers who make their mark in the world of home. VT has a long history with the Rick Owens collection with our clients who consider themselves to be avant-garde or extreme minimalists. This past Saturday, the master of rocked out Avant Garde designs opened his new boutique at 30 Howard Street in SoHo.

Owens has always designed his stores on his own, but this time he enlisted the help of his wife Michele to take the reigns for his home collection. Owens explains, “In the past I have been frustrated by Michele’s patchy communication and wildly freestyle approach, but I also recognize that that was my first attraction to her. A primal instinctive energy that I lacked. The furniture is all about her relationships with the temperamental artisans it takes to produce it, something I would never have the patience, or tenderness to do.”

The pieces are made of stone, bronze, crystal and even styrofoam and plaster. The flatware is made of bone and sterling silver while a couple of ottomans are covered in camel hide. If you happen to find yourself in Soho, be sure to check out the new boutique.
