When Jesse Garza and I wrote our second book, Life in Color, in addition to hours of research, there were days of discussion regarding our experiences with clients, theories on color and how it makes them feel. As we move through our series on color and the reactions to color in design, we hope to inspire you to experiment a bit more when considering your interiors.
The color purple is the most controversial of all colors and definitely one that more people have a strong opinion about than any other – we tend to love it or absolutely despise it. In western culture, it is often the color of choice for artists or other creative types as it is viewed as riskier than other colors. In the past, it tended to be favored by women more than men, but has since become quite popular in the past decade in men’s clothing such as business shirts and ties.
Lavender has a calming affect on people while darker hues of purple can look quite rich or even playful and fun. Here are my favorite examples of purple interiors by style type–see which ones appeal most to you!
