Lighting is one of the most important elements to consider when designing a space. From lamps to sconces to chandeliers, lighting sets the mood and is an opportunity to put your signature on the decor. Just like a pair of fabulous and unusual earrings can complete a woman’s look, a chandelier is often the focal point of a room, so it’s well worth the investment. I love using vintage as much as (if not more than) contemporary options. Here are several fantastic chandeliers to use as inspiration.
It is also important to be mindful of the scale of lighting you select in your design scheme. Here are a few of my tips to consider when selecting a chandelier:
To figure out how large a chandelier to use above a table, you want to be sure that the bottom of the chandelier is 30″ – 36″ inches from the table-top (average tables are 30″ high). To calculate this, measure your ceiling height first, subtract the table height (30″) and then the distance you would like it to hang from top of table (let’s use 32″). This will give you the distance from the bottom of the chandelier to ceiling. Next, subtract the height of the chandelier and this will tell you how long the chain should be.
For example if your ceiling is 8 feet (96″) tall, it would look like this:
96 – 30 – 32 = 34 (Bottom of chandelier to ceiling).
34 – 20 (chandelier height) = 14 inches from ceiling.
For round or square tables, the chandelier should be approximately 2/3 the size of the table. For example, if your table is 80 inches in diameter, the chandelier should be 40 – 50 inches in diameter.
For rectangular tables, it should be approximately 2/3 the width of the table. If the table is a long rectangle, you can use two chandeliers for a dramatic statement or a longer rectangular shape.
