Perhaps the greatest and most influential designer of our time, Azzedine Alaïa, passed away on Saturday in Paris.
Alaïa was an unparalleled designer who believed in empowering women through his designs, not just making a fashion statement. He was the master of construction, often referred to as the “sculptor of the female form.” Alaïa marched to the beat of his own drum, rejecting traditional seasonal calendars and refraining from flashy advertising.
“I dressed women directly on their body, by intuition. This is how I gained experience,” once said Alaïa.
