If trail blazing fashion designer Jacquemus’ most recent achromatic collection is any indication, neutral dressing will continue to be strong trend through this winter and into next fall. And, since many of our clients still find the tonal look tricky to pull off, we set out to create an easy to follow 3 step guide for stylishly wearing head-to-toe neutrals.

Regardless of your style type, a fully neutral look can work for anyone. If you’re going for a bohemian vibe, just add a straw tote. More of a chic style type? Try a pair of neutral kitten heels or a leather trench coat. Avant garde at heart? Throw on a structural balloon sleeve top or a pair of bold, boxy sunglasses.

Still unsure? Keep reading below for some tips from Visual Therapy stylists on how to style neutrals!

1. Mix Tones

Don’t worry if each piece in your outfit isn’t the exact same color, we actually prefer slight variations in tones. Below is a guide to the neutral colors that are meant for mixing and matching. Pro tip: Try combining warm and cool colors for an edgy twist.

2. Add Textures

To take your tonal look to a whole new level, play with different textures. Combining leather, silk, cashmere, tweed, and denim fabrics add dimension to a tonal ensemble.

3. Balance is Key

Fully neutral styling can sometimes read sloppy if the look is too unstructured. Consider the balance of pieces when styling a tonal look—if the dress you want to wear is on the loose side, top it with a structured blazer or use a belt to cinch in your waist. Or, if your look revolves around a relaxed, slouchy sweater, pair it with a tailored pant.
