Though she describes the ideology behind her creative process as “Ephemera,” a Greek word meaning “things that last no more than a day,” swimwear designer Nicole Banning created a luxury swimwear label that would see her design vision and passion exceed far longer than just one day.
In November 2012, after working for Saint Laurent, Nicole began Ephemera to expand her “search of creative freedom, adventure and a little bit of magic.” Here she chats with one of our lead stylists and resident Aussie Anouk Colantoni about fashion, swimwear and getaways.
As a designer, what made you choose to make swimwear above all other designs?
I chose swim as a starting point because I have good technical knowledge of swim and because I saw a gap in the market – an opportunity to do something new. My primary concern is to create beautiful, high quality, must-have objects. A good fit as well as high quality fabrication and finish are my focus.
What did you do before you started Ephemera?
I was working at Yves Saint Laurent/Saint Laurent in Paris. It led to Ephemera in the sense that it was a time of learning and fantastic training, but also left me with a strong desire to be creatively independent.
What’s your design inspiration?
From everywhere; but I do love bookstores, vintage research and sourcing images from a bygone era.
Do you have a style icon when designing for the Ephemera woman?
If I had to pick someone it would be Charlotte Rampling. She has an incredible magnetism; it must be a mix of her innate intelligence and sheer beauty.
What are your tips to choosing a swimsuit that is right for your body shape?
1. Buy for your body shape and remember that fit is paramount! Don’t be afraid to try on a number of styles until you find the one that fits you beautifully. Take note of cut: you want flattering design lines and a flattering leg line.
2. Pay attention to fabric quality: buy a swimsuit that is going to last a couple of summers, not just one.
If you were to choose an Ephemera style for your favorite Visual Therapy style types, what would they be?
Classic: The Twist Back One Piece
Chic: The Split One Piece
Avant-Garde: The Wrap One Piece
Where is your ultimate summer get away destination, and how do you dress for success when you are there?
The Byron Hinterland – on the Far North Coast of NSW, Australia. I always pack a big hat, Grecian sandals and anything made of cotton to keep me cool. And sunscreen!!
