New York stylists Jesse Garza and Joe Lupo of Visual Therapy, which has clients in San Francisco, see something less calculated in the chunky flat trend: They say it’s a reaction to increasingly lofty heel heights.
“As the shoes got higher, something had to cause a reboot,” they said by e-mail, “and the Birkenstock phenomenon certainly did the trick.”
Laid-back Bay Area women with an innate bohemian intellectual chic are naturals for this summer’s trend. But to pull it off takes flair.
At the Dior Cruise 2015 show in New York, Garza and Lupo were stunned by a fashion editor with little makeup but bold red lips wearing a long Céline vest, skinny cropped pants, a tank and Céline Birkenstocks.
“With all the ‘it girls’ soaring in sky-highs, there she was looking fresh and modern in Birkenstocks, throwing everyone else into the shade,” they wrote.
An element of modernist or architectural clothing or jewelry is a must with the shoe, they said. A bold lip adds a needed feminine kick.
