As an interior designer, it’s easy to fall into the habit of repeating your favorite color combinations, which is why it’s crucial to travel and gather inspiration from everywhere to attain beautiful new (and old!) directions.
When Jesse and I wrote our second book “Life in Color,” I had no idea that this research would follow me through my entire career. It all came into play—as did my years as a dandy in the 90’s—when a new client from London retained VT Home to create a colorful pied-á-terre just off Fifth Avenue in a wonderful 19th Century townhouse.
The way I like to do color—depending on the style of the client of course—is to always do a mix of either classic furniture with contemporary fabrics or modernist pieces in classic fabrics. Some of my favorites, when it comes to color, are french masters such as Pierre Frey, or English companies like Mulberry, as they have such a wonderful sense of pattern and color mixing.
