The way we see it (and we constantly remind our clients of this), having a powerful wardrobe is not about buying as many pieces as possible—e.g. “stuff” that just clutters your closet. It’s about having the right pieces.
Here, we share with you what those right pieces are for this fall/winter season, and more importantly, how to make them work for your style type and your current wardrobe.
1: The Block Heel Boot
Remember when achieving a powerful look meant suffering through the day in uncomfortable heels? Those days are gone—the block heel is back—and it all started courtesy of the ‘70s. Its big return in 2015 came in the form of a sandal and this fall, it’s all about the chunky heeled bootie. We love it for its comfort and versatility.
How to Wear:
We’ve been styling chunky heeled booties with long, flowing silhouettes. It pairs perfectly with this season’s high-waist wide leg pants, dark denim flares, and long A-line skirts.
2: Unexpected Layering
Layering is a no-brainer in the colder months, but this season, we’ve given it a modern update. Wearing a button down shirt, blouse, or turtleneck under a dress is a great way to extend the life of your summer frocks.
How to Wear:
Update your sleeveless dresses and vests by layering a fitted knit turtleneck underneath. We especially love turtlenecks styled with this season’s short, square, ‘60s inspired mod dresses. Just slip on your block heel booties and you’re good to go! Bonus: this day into evening look feels fresh while also being appropriate for the office.
Trend 3: Big Volume Pants
Believe it or not, the wide leg pants we were loyal to in the early 2000s are making a comeback! These throwbacks are a must-have this fall with their long, flattering shape, so dig through your archives to see if you have a pair from the good ol’ days.
How to Wear:
Style wide leg pants with a simple turtleneck or a Victorian-inspired blouse. Complete the look with a pointed-toe block heel boot.
Trend 4: The Longer Hemline
Although we are very into mod inspired mini dresses for fall, when it comes to skirts we think longer lengths are a far more versatile and flattering silhouette. Our go-to styles this fall are the classic A-line, a longer pencil skirt that hits just below the knee, and a swingy midi length. We especially love skirts with special details such as an unexpected front slit or military inspired buttons.
How to Wear:
Pull off any these longer styles with the help of your trustee turtleneck or a chunky knit. Block heel booties also work great with longer skirts and will give your look a cool fall vibe.
Trend 5: Black Meets Navy
There’s something very chic and modern about wearing black and navy together. When the trend started a couple of seasons ago, we were styling black and navy separates together. Now, the newest way to wear navy and black is with pieces that are constructed with both colors in them (as spotted in current collections by Chanel and Celine.)
How to Wear:
Keep the look in the same color family (think greys and saturated blues.) Try pairing black jeans with a black and navy color-block sweater or a black and navy dress topped with a charcoal grey coat.
