At Visual Therapy, we’re all about Mind, Body, and Soul. As we work with clients to line up their optimal wardrobes and help them to be the best version of themselves, we’re huge believers that it’s not the dress, but what’s in the dress that matters. And even though clothes can help you feel like a movie star, there’s something that needs to be taken care of first on a deeper level. Welcome to “Wellness Wednesdays”: our weekly feature to bring you tips for a healthy, whole and fulfilled life.

Fall is here! I’ve always been a Fall kinda girl (The boots! The scarves! The cozy sweaters! The changing colors of the leaves!) There is an exciting transitional buzz in the air. There is a transition waiting to happen inside our bodies, and we need to strengthen their digestive fire so that we’re able to handle the heavier, more dense winter foods.

One way to do it is through a detox. When I use the word “detox” I DO NOT mean deprivation. Detox is about taking away foods that may be wreaking havoc on your system, allowing it to rest and reset. Simultaneously, it is also about letting go of non-food toxins that are also not serving your body or your life. Cleanses are not about starving, drinking juices or living on water.
Our bodies naturally detoxify as part of the normal daily processes. In fact our digestive system is the BEST detox system, but if and only if it functions optimally. Unfortunately today, given the fast-pace of our lives along with the chemicals found in the food we eat, our bodies have a hard time keeping up. We’ve become a society that relies on packaged and processed food too often, and that takes days if not weeks to be fully digested.
Body systems and organs that were once capable of naturally cleaning out unwanted substances are now completely over-loaded to the point where toxic materials remain inside the tissues. Our bodies try to protect us from dangerous substances by isolating and surrounding them with mucous and fat so that they will not cause an imbalance or trigger an immune system reaction (some people carry around 10 extra pounds of mucous (fat) that harbors this waste.)

So many people are eating what they think are “healthy foods” but that are really causing their bodies’ inflammation, bloat, and that overwhelming feeling of ‘blah’.
Detoxification through a carefully designed cleansing diet is the best way to assist your body’s natural self-cleansing system. All that without going hungry, just delicious clean eating! Even if your diet is good, a Fall cleanse can revitalize your system and rid your body of harmful bacteria, or the one-too-many summer BBQ and cocktails.
Even more important is a holistic approach to detoxification: detoxifying your body goes well beyond food. It’s about staying active (15 minutes a day will do it!), drinking enough water, and using super simple ayurvedic techniques to cleanse your body (like oil pulling and dry brushing).
Emotions are a big part of eating (and overeating), and a lot of times we overeat just because we’re rushed, focused on something else but our food, or stressed. That’s why 1-minute meditations and affirmations are part of my fall detox program, as well as an important part of my work with private clients. A simple breath exercise can help you get back to the centered YOU and control what, how much and how you eat.
