Wellness: The Class, A Bootcamp for Body + Soul

AT VISUAL THERAPY, WE’RE ALL ABOUT MIND, BODY, AND SOUL. AS WE WORK WITH CLIENTS TO LINE UP THEIR OPTIMAL WARDROBES AND HELP THEM TO BE THE BEST VERSION OF THEMSELVES, WE’RE HUGE BELIEVERS THAT IT’S NOT THE DRESS, BUT WHAT’S IN THE DRESS THAT MATTERS. AND EVEN THOUGH CLOTHES CAN HELP YOU FEEL LIKE A MOVIE STAR, THERE’S SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE TAKEN CARE OF FIRST ON A DEEPER LEVEL. WELCOME TO “WELLNESS WEDNESDAY”: OUR WEEKLY FEATURE TO BRING YOU TIPS FOR A HEALTHY, WHOLE AND FULFILLED LIFE.Natalie Kuhn of "theclass"

Gone are the days when you had to choose between a workout that’s good for your body vs a practice that brings internal peace.

I’ve taken two of what’s unpretentiously known as “the class” in the past 3 days, and need I say… I’m hooked. Combining bootcamp-style cardio intervals, yoga stretches, meditation, and sound (yes, you get to release it all!) it seriously works your body–plus, your mind and your spirit.

I’ve tried it all: different styles of yoga, chanting, meditation, dance workouts, barre, spiritual cycling, and TRX, but nothing has an effect as powerful as “the class”. As Natalie Kuhn, “the class” instructor, made it clear during our rooftop class with lululemon, “It’s not about the beach body. We’re here to move the emotional wall that you hit when you tell yourself that ‘you can’t,’ ‘you won’t,’ ‘you’re not good/strong/fill-in-the-blank enough”.

The basis of “the class” is working one muscle group at a time for a full song (think Whitney Houston and Miley Cyrus) to the point where you go past physical pain and straight into the emotions. That’s where the shift really happens.

Letting out loud sighs and even screams is encouraged and in fact, incorporated into this 65-minute workout, and I have to say, it might be my favorite part (besides the rewarding final meditation.) There’s something powerfully wild, if I may, in connecting to your own voice in the warmed up, totally sweaty, vulnerable, and determined condition that “the class” takes you into.

It’s an experience. All you have to do is try it for yourself with Taryn Toomey, Natalie Kuhn or Jaycee Gossett (all three instructors are outstanding). Oh, and just so you know–you might end up neighboring mats with Naomi Watts, who is a devotee of the method.
