In 1973, five French couturiers and five American designers came head to head in a fashion show fundraiser known as the “Battle of Versailles”. Oscar de la Renta, Halston, Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows and Bill Blass went up against Yves Saint Laurent, Mark Bohan for Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Emanuel Ungaro and Pierre Cardin. Unofficially marking the arrival of American high fashion, this fashion face-off gathered a star-studded crowd at the famous Royal French Chateau outside Paris, including Grace Kelly and Liza Minelli.
This iconic event is the subject of the new film Versailles ’73: American Runway Revolution, which will premiere during New York Fashion Week in September. The documentary features interviews with some of those models, including Pat Cleveland and Alva Chinn, as well as former Vogue editor Grace Mirabella and several fashion historians.
