The other week we attended “The Power of Style: Style for Social Change” event with guest speaker Rachel Roy, and felt really inspired by how charged she is with passion to help others. Here is Rachel’s Gift, Message and Cause: a fashion designer who dresses Michelle Obama, Kate Hudson and Jennifer Garner, a mother of two, a philanthropist, and an entrepreneur.
Rachel’s gift is using her passion for fashion to create positive change, both on a personal scale and on a community scale. Her philosophy is, “at the end of the day, I want to create collections that my customer will walk away with a silhouette that she doesn’t even know what collection it comes from. That it just lasts in her wardrobe and makes her feel strong and confident and hopefully happy.”
Rachel has a feel-good approach to clothing, just like VT, and has said that “If a great outfit gets you one step closer to feeling good about yourself, then it’s worth every penny.” We agree! Rachel is also a firm believer in designing the life you want to live, and she has recently launched “The Life“, a series of video interviews with her friends on how they have pursued their dreams and goals.
Rachel proves by example that “People who believe that change is possible are the ones who make it happen.” She supports a variety of charities and fair trade initiatives, from OrphanAid Africa (an organization that helps children in Ghana grow up in a healthy environment) to Fairwinds Trading, which provides work for women artisans in Africa. She has also created collection of handcrafted jewelry and T-Shirts with Deepak Chopra benefiting the Chopra Foundation, which focuses on helping to create a peaceful, just, sustainable, and healthy world.
Rachel’s style type is Chic Avant-Garde.
