The holiday season usually means traveling. Whether you’re spending time with friends and family, or off to an exciting destination, these surefire tips will make the packing process much easier.
Before packing, ask yourself the following questions. This will give you a better idea of where to begin and will also help you to determine the size of the luggage and how much you will bring.
- Where am I going?
How many days will I be gone?
What is the weather?
What is the purpose of this trip?
- One week before your trip, take an inventory of what’s in your closet and try on the things you may want to take with you. Make a list of what you are missing, then shop and fill in.
Consider if certain things will travel well, can you fold them, are they functional? For example, a great investment is a black dress that you can wear several different ways – with heels, with flip-flops, add a belt, or jewelry.
Organize everything before you put it in your luggage. You can lay it out on the bed, but an even better way is to use a rolling rack. You can see everything hanging together and all the looks together. This helps you to visualize your travel capsule. From these looks you can say – Where am I going? Do these pieces fit with the nature of my vacation? Will I be attending special events or just relaxing? Once you determine these critical elements you can pick your favorite pieces that fall into the particular categories.
In order to keep things neat, folded and organized, pack your garments in clear plastic travel bags from the Container Store or L.L. Bean or even basic large Ziplocs. You can section out unmentionables, and you can keep looks together so you know exactly what to wear and how to wear it when you unpack. You can also use the clear plastic garment bags to wrap dresses, etc or even lay the bags in between the garments.
Don’t be a slave to your luggage! It’s about the adventure, not the clothes.
