A Guide to the Avant-garde Style Type

Christine Centenera Fashion Week

So you’ve taken our Style Type Quiz and discovered that your dominant style is Avant-garde.

Arguably the most adventurous of the style types, the avant-garde woman sees fashion as wearable art rather than clothing. She adores playing with shapes and proportions and although she favors black for everyday, she’s not one to shy away from whites, bright colors, or even metallics.

In the Avant-garde Style Type’s wardrobe, you’ll find various different shapes, asymmetrical hemlines, and pieces with lots of volume. The Avant-garde dresser also has a predilection for menswear-inspired clothing and loves the idea of a full-on tuxedo pantsuit for formal evenings. She doesn’t skimp on accessories either, most of her handbags and jewelry are statement-making and fashion-forward, but she has a keen awareness of how to create a sleek and balanced look.

Designers such as Comme des Garçons, Ann Demeulemeester, and Rick Owens are known for producing some of the most beautiful Avant-garde fashions and celebrities such as Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, and Björk are a few of the most well-known Avant-garde style types.

Whether or not you’ve mastered your own Avant-garde wardrobe, we’ve got some inspiration ahead with some of our favorite Avant-garde looks.
