9 1/2 Weeks
Arguably the original Fifty Shades of Grey, 9 1/2 Weeks is the story of a new relationship between a young art gallery assistant and a Wall Street Trader—played by Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke, respectively. Even though the film eventually takes a dark turn, Basinger’s minimalist ensembles of crisp white shirts and silk sheaths remain flawless and consistent.
I Am Love
Anything starring Tilda Swinton is usually a no-brainer, and I am Love is no exception. This film beautifully depicts the hidden turmoil within a wealthy Italian textile family. Being a movie about a fashion family, it’s no surprise that this film is one stylish scene after another.
Dreamers
Set against the backdrop of the 1968 Paris Student Riots, Dreamers tells the story of an American college student who becomes entangled in an erotic conflict with a pair of Parisian siblings. Isabelle, played by French actress Eva Green, perfectly encapsulates the style of a broody Parisian University student in the 1960s with her wardrobe of crushed velvet dresses, romantic florals, and of course—berets.
Malena
The always elegant Monica Belucci plays Malena, a gorgeous 1940’s war widow from Sicily in this cinematic masterpiece directed by Italian screenwriter Guiseppe Tornatore. Throughout the film, Malena’s looks rotate between billowy floral print dresses and tailored ’40s silhouettes, never failing to impress those around her with her effortlessly chic style.
La Piscine
A summertime film set on the beautiful Côte d’Azur in the 1960’s, La Piscine stars a young Jane Birkin as a carefree 18 year old girl visiting family friends with her father. A shocking twist towards the end of the film will have you captivated, but so will the beachy yet polished ensembles.
